What happened when the Mona Lisa was attacked? According to witnesses, the would-be vandal approached the artwork while dressed as an elderly woman in a wheelchair and wearing a long wig. He allegedly jumped up, tried to smash the glass, and then smeared cake. He threw roses as he was tackled by guards, according to Reuters.

According to The Guardian, a 36-year-old man was arrested in Paris on Sunday after hurling cake at the 16th-century painting, arguably the most famous artwork on Earth. Leonardo da Vinci's painting was not damaged because it is protected by bulletproof glass at the Louvre Museum.

Other attacks on the Mona Lisa have occurred over the years. In 1956, there were two of them, one with acid and one with a stone. A woman threw a type of red spray at it while it was on display at Tokyo's National Museum in 1974, and a tourist threw a cup of tea at it in August 2009.
