It is a special day when we express our love, gratitude, and appreciation for our moms and mother figures who have sacrificed so much for us. We’ll also share some Mothers Day Quotes, unique gift ideas and tips to make this day even more special for your mom.

Mother’s Day History

The beautiful bond of love shared between kids and mothers is honored and celebrated on Mother’s Day. While versions of Mother’s Day are celebrated worldwide, traditions vary depending on the country. In Thailand, for example, Mother’s Day is always celebrated in August on the birthday of the current queen.

Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May each year in the US. In the UK, Mother’s Day is always celebrated 3 weeks before Easter. Celebrations go back to ancient times when Greeks and Romans held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses.

However, the origins of the modern Mother’s Day as celebrated in the United States date back to the 19th century. A woman named Anna Reeves Jarvis helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children. In 1868 Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” at which mothers got together and promoted peace.

The official Mother’s Day holiday started in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Following the death of her mother, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. She organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration in 1908 after getting financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner. Thousands of people came out to attend a Mother’s Day event at one of the retail stores in Philadelphia.

Following the success of her first Mother’s Day, Jarvis was determined to see her holiday added to the national calendar. She argued that American holidays were biased toward male achievements.

As a result, she started a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers and prominent politicians urging for a special day honoring motherhood. By 1912 many states, towns and churches had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday. Her persistence paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson officially established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Mother's Day Celebration

Anna Jarvis had originally conceived of Mother’s Day as a day of personal celebration between mothers and families. Her version of the day involved wearing a white carnation as a badge and visiting one’s mother. But once Mother’s Day became a national holiday, it was not long before florists, card companies and other merchants capitalized on its popularity. By 1920 she had become disgusted with how the holiday had been commercialized.

By the time of her death in 1948 Jarvis had disowned the holiday altogether and even actively lobbied the government to see it removed from the American calendar. Another alternate observance of Mother’s Day can be found in Ethiopia. Families gather each fall to sing songs and eat a large feast as part of a multi-day celebration honoring motherhood.

In the United States, Mother’s Day continues to be celebrated by presenting mothers and other women with gifts and flowers. It has become one of the biggest holidays for consumer spending. Families also celebrate by giving mothers a day off from activities like cooking or other household chores.

Mother’s Day Importance :

As a daughter to a single mother I would like to share a few words on the importance of mother’s day:

My mother is a walking miracle it is very true in all sense. Yes she spends her time to grow her child and make him a good citizen of the country. She adds colors and melody to the life of a child as well as family. We have many relationships with people around us. But the most important love the pure and divine relationship is that of a mother and a child. As we know a mother dedicates her whole life to her children without expecting anything. On this day, we show our gratitude and love towards our mothers.

Dear friends, our life should be devoted to our mother every day. Our mothers cannot be compared with anyone in the whole universe it is our duty to support them when necessary. But unfortunately the new generation sends their mothers to old age homes in old age it is a very cruel and shameful act at this civilized period. We can’t imagine the life without our mother. Mother is a person who teaches us to walk on our own feet.

Today all of us have a great chance to thank our mothers. I will say always, a mother is a symbol of sacrifice and dedication. In fact, before finishing my speech, I want to say a few words on my mother. She is not only my mother but also my most wonderful friend. My mother is also my teacher, counselor and role model. I am always ready to share my feelings with my mother with open minded.

Mothering Sunday, which falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, has been celebrated in the UK for centuries. However, the modern version of Mother’s Day, as we know it today, was actually popularized in the UK by merchants and retailers who saw it as a commercial opportunity in the mid-20th century.

By the 1950s, the holiday had become widely celebrated across the UK, and people began observing it on the same day as Mothering Sunday. So, while Mother’s Day may not have originated in the UK, it has certainly become a beloved tradition in the country, with people taking the opportunity to show their love and appreciation for their mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures.

Q11. Is mothers day a British thing?

A11. Well, it’s a bit complicated. The holiday now known as Mother’s Day originated in the United States in the early 20th century, but a similar holiday called Mothering Sunday has been celebrated in Britain for centuries. Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, which varies in date from year to year. While the two holidays share some similarities, they have distinct origins and traditions.

Mothering Sunday in Britain was originally a Christian holiday when people would return to their “mother” church for a special service, and it eventually became a day to honor mothers and mother figures. In contrast, the modern version of Mother’s Day in the US was created as a secular holiday to honor mothers and promote peace.

However, UK-based merchants and retailers saw the commercial potential of the holiday and promoted it heavily in the country, leading to the widespread celebration of Mother’s Day as we know it today in the UK. So, while the two holidays have different origins and traditions, Mother’s Day is certainly celebrated and beloved in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
